After fighting mrsa for 6 weeks without ABs, I finally had to go see my doctor, cause I had 1 on my anus...scarey! Anyway, he put me on sulfameth, which I guess is a substitute for bactrim ds(2x a day for 10 days and 1 refill) and rifampin(5 days only). And medical physohex to use on skin 1x a day. Just wondering what some of you think! Did the S & R work for anyone on here? I am just wondering if I should start back on the Allimed drops under the tongue, just not take the drops at the same time I do the medication! So, what I have at home is:gse, colliodal silver, oil of oregano, allimed drops and cream! Any suggestions? Thanks, Ron in California 8701

Ron, By all means, take the allimed drops along with the rest of your regimen. At least until you feel everythings in check again. This is a very stressfull time of year and sometimes our body responds to it by "acting out" like a reaction. This can happen even though we think we're cool and have a handle on everything. It certainly wont weaken your immune system, only strengthen it. And if stress or whatever is causing a small outbreak again, It's not going to hurt anything going back on everything you were on before. Once you're back in check again, I'd recommend taking odorless garlic as a permanant maintanance suppliment. Then you can keep the allimed drops for outbreaks, when you need that extra to fight active infections. Stress seemed to have played a huge role for me while I was fighting an active MRSA infection. It can really suppress your immune system. Good Luck and God Bless Linda 8705

Oops, hit the neter too soon. Anyway, this has been giving me 6 to 12 weeks without outbreaks. I asked about other meds and my doctor said that this is the ONLY one that works. 8810

Kelly: Thanks for you post. I am still on bactrim, 2x a day. The 1st 5 days i was on bactrim, the doctor also gave me rifampin. I am also taking Allimed drops and use the cream as well. Also, am using active manuka honey 25+ internally, plus drinking lots of white tea and a very potent green tea and tiaga tea as well. I fear going off of bactrim. Have you taken it 2x a day everyday for last 12 weeks? 8817

Ron, I was on Bactrim for 30 days (3x a day) for a large abscess on my back. There was soft tissue damage and it took a while for new tissue to grow back. After these 30 days, I went off Bactrim and within 14 days, I had a new, smaller outbreak, also on my back, inches from the original abscess. I then went back on Bactrim for 10 more days (2x a day this time) which cleared up the smaller boil and remained free for any MRSA outbreaks for 4 months thereafter. It's my opinion that the Bactrim is useful in suppressing MRSA and probably making it dormant for varying lengths of time, but it doesn't kill it outright like we might want. Which means that augmenting the immune system is an important activity to engage in after stopping antibiotics. 8820

Ron, I have not taken it for six weeks. I just had the bactrim ds tabs for 7 days, than all my legions went away. In the following week i take the bactim ds tabs for 7 days 2x per day, rifampin 300mg 2x per day, and also put bactroban ointment up my nose for 7 days, which is supposed to kill the colony. I wash my body with hibiclens all the time. So the 6 to 12 weeks without out breaks i have not been taking the medicine. 8885

It is important that during that second week, I wash every piece of clothing I own. As well as blankets, sheets, pillow cases etc. Things must be washed in hot water and dryed on the hottest dryer setting. This should kill any mrsa you left on your clothes. You should also get some Lysol wipes and cleans everything in your house top to bottom. As well as your car, and your office at work. You could have left this bacteria anywhere that you have touched and you could pick it back up again very easily. Currently my doctor said I could have left it on my cat but there is no way to test for it and that I should get rid of them. Personally, I think that’s a little extreme. We'll see how this goes. Additionally, if you live with anyone, you should have them get cultured (they do a nasals swab) to see if they have it. You could have given it to them and they don't know they have because they don't have any symptoms, and they can pass it back to you. Good luck Ron! 8886

I was on bactrim and rifampin (rifampin only for 4 days). The rifampin is extremely strong, and can cause medically induced hepatitus. It really knocked me out. Any way, please see my posts, "My Infectious Disease Specialist Says". I have been mrsa free now for 11 months. Thank God! Constant use of phisohex and bacitricin, in addition to supplements, is what has helped me get a normal life once again. Mrsa is the first thing I think about when I wake up, it's the last thing I think about before going to bed. It has to be in order for me to remember to do my bactracin regimen. The mental toll is great, but it certainly beats another break out. I am wishing you the best, and I hope my posts will help you. 8924

Hi, I'm a 23 y/o male and I was diagnosed with a MRSA related boil on my arm about 5 months ago. They prescribed me sulfameth/trimethoprim. After taking it for about 12 days it seemed to have knocked out the infection, so I vowed to finish my prescription. Out of the blue I had severe reactions... a full body rash, itching, cold chills and a fever. Eitherway it seemed to have been cleared, but the same Boil has just reappeared in the same area a day ago. I have no reason not to believe the original Doctor's diagnosis of MRSA, but i'm still not positive. If you have a MRSA infection do the bumps/boils start up anywhere on your body? Or do they reoccur at the same spot? Thanks for any input or help, it's very frustrating... I"m wondering if this is something I'm going to have to deal with for life... or maybe this time they'll prescribe me antibiotics that I can finish out without having an allergic reaction. If you have a new one come up, have it checked if u have history of it, better safe than sorry. This stuff almost killed my dad. 9053

I am on my 3rd round of bactrim and was given rifampin this time. It seems to be helping the lesion clear (thankfully, as it is in my nose), but I am getting a rash around my ankles. Is this a reaction that any of y'all had? I am taking advice on the hibiclens and phisohex, and I am going to get my family cultured (we have 4 kids, so it's difficult to pin them down). 16669

Dear Kris - Read the Bob Anderson with Garlic thread and the answer to your problem will become clear to you. It is better to smell like garlic than to have MRSA. Garlic water really works, but not if you don't use it. 16670

This sounds similar to what I went through. Read Bob Anderson's posts on garlic. Try it. You have nothing to loose...Except lesions. 16671

Kris - Do I have this right… MRSA lesion is in your nose? I’d like to ask a few questions if you don’t mind. Do you have an Infectious Disease specialist? Have you been given Bactroban (prescription antibiotic ointment), and have you been instructed how to use it to decolonize nares (nostrils)? You are aware MRSA bacteria is a contagion easily spread to other sites about your body, as well as spread from one to another… yes? To your question concerning rash around your ankles as a reaction… I’ve yet to see this as a reaction, but it is quite plausible bacteria has been cross contaminated. Cross contamination is accomplished as easily as blowing your nose where mucus passes active MRSA lesion… and then you scratched your ankle with contaminated fingers. A minute opening in skin surface from a slight scratch is enough to succeed in cross contaminating MRSA bacteria where that site becomes MRSA infected. Impeccable hand washing is a necessity. I’m glad to see you are planning to have family cultured (directly), as all in family should decolonize simultaneously. It is also important to take measures maintaining reduction of bacteria in your environment. Equally important is to work on your immune systems by supplementing that which our bodies lack from our diets. This affords system to function optimally doing its preprogrammed biological job of ridding our bodies of system invaders. Hope this helps. Best wishes, ladyk 16676

Last year I had a shoulder surgery (rotorcuff)...Withing three days of coming out of the hospital I came down with flu like symptoms. I never got MRSA in my wound, but broke out with what i thought was a spider bite on my buttock....I was embarassed to go to the dr.and dealt with it for two weeks as it got so huge and painfull. Finally two weeks later I ended up in the hospital again as I broke out in another sore on my knee.and couldnt stand it...they cultured it as MRSA..was on iv vanco for the weekend. Since then I have had MRSA 5 more times. Never had MRSA before my shoulder surgery...The last time I had it I was having hip pain...I kept going to the ER and I was very clear that I had had MRSA several times before and each time they sent me home with a shot of pain med and said I pulled a muscle. The last two times I went in I had to be wheeled in a wheel chair. Finally a week later after begging a specialist to see me,mri, and fluid sample of my hip joint...I went in for emergency surgery and now have a beautiful 12 inch zipper down the side of my leg. I had septic hip which tested pos. for MRSA. I was laid up and off work for about 6 months. This year dealing with mrsa has been extreemly depressing, scarry---I dont know where to turn anymore. My hubby just got it on his hand ended up having surgery on his hand and spending 5 days in the hos. Ive been going to an infect. disease dr at U.C. Davis and I tested neg to a nose culture. Ive been on vanco 4 times now....How long before that stops working...Im in my mid-30's and this is the worst physical and mental pain Ive had to deal with. The infec. disease dr. is not much help either...just dont shave and wash with anti-bacterial...wash in hot water, dont share towels...clean w/ bleach mixture. ..Ive used the nose cream--and so has he.....Weve done so much research we are begining to be OCD around our house. ....Not sure where to go from here...Im just waiting for it to pop up again and hoping its not deadly next time. Is it ever gonna get better? 16682

Louise - Fortunate (in one sense) you dodged a bullet, not getting MRSA in surgical shoulder wound! First thing that comes to mind while reading your post is what topical care regimen are you using to control MRSA bacteria? What is your understanding concerning cross contamination? In my opinion one must address three areas in order to control MRSA bacteria. 1. Topical flora balance (maintained). 2. Internal balance - supplying the body's immune system with that which it lacks from diet (maintained). 3. Environmental reduction of bacteria overload (maintained). There is no quick fix when MRSA is concerned. This becomes an ongoing lifestyle change in order to prevent / control / interrupt cycling MRSA outbreaks. By maintaining care regimens many on forum have gained a bit of normalcy back in their lives, some of us have been outbreak free for years. Some of us having pre-existing compromising health factors are constantly on the wire striving for balance. Yes, I agree… dealing with MRSA is/can be depressing and scary, as most illnesses are. Cry for while. Get mad for while. Check your mortality views. But go through the stages quickly with bottom line goal being… face this head on with best choices concerning how to keep one step ahead of this bacteria by learning about it and how it affects you particularly. And with determined patience you will gain back your life. It may not be 100%, but I would not have wanted to miss one single thing I have been graced to be a part of - from contraction til now. To your questions… You can culture nare (nostril) negative, and be MRSA positive via lesion culture. One can also culture nare positive as carrier, and have no symptoms of MRSA infection/lesions. It is a possibility to become vanco resistant. Culture should be done before ingesting antibiotics. C&S (culture and sensitivity/susceptibility). Sensitivity/Susceptibility determines whether there is resistance present or not. I’m here to help you through. Louise, learn all you can. Research. Be proactive rather than reactive. Ask the million questions. Please use a discerning mind when deciding on things to try, as one would in all important situations. Decisions are yours, best to become as knowledgeable as possible, after all… this is your life. If you’re interested in more information, or have questions, just let us know… we’ll do our best to help. Best wishes, ladyk 16691

I have been MRSA free for almost 6 years. In 2004 I was hospitalized two times for MRSA. The first time for 5 days when I was diagnosed with MRSA. I had three boils. They put me on Levaquin and Vancomyacin IV. I was sent home with an IV for 5 days. My doctor had no idea how I got this. I haden't been in the hospital, my immune system was tested twice after the fact and I was fine, and to this day my doctor and I have no idea how I picked it up. The second time - 8 months later I again was put in the hospital with a boil on my leg and it had to be lanced. I was in the hospital for 8 days, put on Rifampin and IV vanco and was sent home with a PIC lines to continue with the vanco and also to continue with the Rifampin. Again my immune system was tested and everything was fine. Be very careful if you are given Rifampin. 6 weeks after my last stay I had to call an ambulance and was put in the hospital for 5 weeks. The Rifampin, in addition to Macrobid I was taking daily to prevent UTIs, Tylenol PM and the statin I was taking for chlorestoral caused me to have TOXIC DRUG INDUCED HEPATITIS AND TOXIC DRUG INDUCED LUPUS. I was under a doctor's care for these terrible ailments for almost a year. I have been MRSA free for 6 years, do not have Lupus and do not have Hepatitis. The only preventive measures I take since my hospitalizations are to swab my nose with municipron about twice a week and constanly wash my hands and use antiobiotic gell. No garlic, or antything along those lines. 16723
