can carriers spread?

This question isn't about MRSA only, but any staph. If one were a "carrier", ie, colonized in nose, can this be easily spread? If one were going to work with medically vulnerable adults (ie someone on ventilator, feeding tube, etc), could they be jeopardized if one WAS a carrier?

I ask because I may work with such an individual in the future and while I have not been diagnosed with staph or MRSA, someone at my job had mrsa and I had to dispense meds to them. After reading all this I'm thinking it would be wise to get a "nose swab" before I accepted a position working with people in a more medical type setting. Also, I get little reddish "zits" if you will, and always have, in various places on may skin. Could it be possible I have a regular staph infection?

Yes to all your questions. In my opinion to protect yourself and others, you would do best to have a nare culture.

Have you tried Hibiclens antimicrobial wash? If you do, limit to 3x weekly - in order to preserve normal flora.

I agree with LadyK. In fact, in the UK, if a health care employee tests positive for MRSA via nose swab, they cannot return to work until they test clean 3 times.
