What is the life span of mrsa on surface items. Someone told me 24 hours and mrsa would die... In other words- should I clean the house and ever inch with bleach spray to kill mrsa on the door handles and towels or just take a weekend vacation? 16112

Hoover, If only it were that easy! Ladyk and others know much more than I, but it's my understanding that MRSA can live on certain surfaces for six and even more. I hope I'm wrong! 16113

Most studies show that MRSA can live up to 90 days / 3 months. 16151

There is a very interesting study below... albeit it is UK based, one surely can grasp the idea of what we all (as human host) are up against concerning MRSA. The Effect of Humidity on the Survival of MRSA on Hard Surfaces http://ibe.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/15/1/85.pdf ladyk 16153

In this studies below... German researchers found “bacteria can survive for many months on surfaces.” [Overall, the review noted that gram-negative bacteria persist for longer periods of time than gram-positive bacteria. Climactic factors can play a role in persistence as well — humid conditions were found to increase survival times for most types of bacteria, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. Only Staphylococcus aureus was found to persist longer at lower humidities.] Fomites and Infection Transmission Kris Ellis 11/07/2006 http://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/articles/6b1feat2.html ladyk 16154

I've read these studies before and it is true that it can live on surfaces for months, especially if the dust on the surfaces contains the bacteria. I went through several rounds attempting decolonization and was only able to get rid of MRSA once I began cleaning every surface daily, disinfecting furniture weekly and also having the floors and carpets cleaned. Very time consuming, but worth it in the end! 16160
