Cats & MRSA - our experience

I am sure many of you have seen the recent articles about pets and MRSA, and the fact that families w/cats have 8x greater incidence of MRSA. We have a cat. I think I have unravelled some of our family MRSA mysteries.

I have been stumped by the difference between where our son breaks out, and where my husband and I (yes, us too) have had occurrences.

Son's first infection was on the outside of his arm this summer. Now they are on his neck or face - suggesting they are self-caused by fingernails and picking at acne when he is stressed out.

I have had spots on the backs of my thighs, suggesting I sat on something and then a spot on the inside of my elbow (started as poison oak and then got infected). I thought the locations were odd.
Husband finally had something turn up this week, the beginning of a boil on the inside of his elbow. So odd that it is the same location as my outbreak. Then last night I started getting a spot on the other arm in the same spot. Too weird.

The answer: we are the only ones who pick up and carry the kitty! She loves to wander under our son's desk and in his closet, but he doesn't pet her much (she won't let him - that's another story!) and he never picks her up. She must have picked up dander and dust in his room. Husband broke out after he got a small scratch on his arm from one of her back claws, but he mostly wears long sleeves so it took several months for him to pick up a cross infection. Kitty sleeps in my chair a lot, and I don't wear long sleeves much in the house, I was cross-infected sooner than Hubby. Both of us were not infected directly by our son.

I have already wiped down her paws and legs with witch hazel, which is safe for cats. I am also going to clean her favorite spots and blankets, and do some focused cleaning of floors and furniture. Let's hope it has an effect - it should. now that we are aware.
