HA-MRSA Long Term Effects

I contracted HA-MRSA after a back surgery in 1993. I had the infection in the back wound and a bone graft site. After IV antibiotics for 16 weeks and oral antibiotices for another 6 months I was infection free. I had subsequent plastic surgery to close my wound and two years later was back to "normal". I'm wondering what the long term effects of this type of infection are. Since the infection I've been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia which is well controlled with lifestyle and meds. However, I seem to get sick a lot. I get frequent sinus infections, colds and get the flu every year even getting the flu shot. I take a lot of vitamins. Does anyone know if having HA-MRSA can impact the immune system long-term and make you more susceptible to infection? 15684

It would appear that once you've had HA MRSA, you may kill the bug, but the toll on your body is pretty bad. It's been almost 2 years since my hip infection and I still suffer from fatigue, sweats and pain in my joints. The antibiotics alone can wipe out your immune system and anything can move in and take over. Improve your diet and lifestyle if you want to obtain optimum success. That includes a healthy diet, with fewer sugars and starches, better protein, dark green leafy veggies, orange veggies (carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, etc) and fresh fruit. Get outside and enjoy the sun for it also helps some vitamins to process. The scars of MRSA are often not seen by others. I feel as if my two year battle has actually aged me 10 years. 15685

I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling that. I can't say that I've ever really felt "healthy" since the infection. I have to stay on my vitamins and any time I overdo it, or let myself get tired physically or emotionally, I end up getting sick with some type of infection. I've had to have two other surgeries to repair the scars and subsequent cysts in the surgical area. I will definitely try to improve my diet. It could use some work. Thank you for responding. 15690

Fibromyalgia destroys the immune system. That would leave you open to lots of co infections and mrsa could be one of them. Often brucella, visna virus and mycoplasma infections accompany fibromyalgia. 15698

Ruth: I didn't realize that about fibromyalgia but it makes sense. Since being diagnosed, I've had infections most people don't get such as a yeast infection in my lungs and viral menigitis. I've found that vitamin therapy is essential to staying healthy. 15701

Selenium 600 mg a day is supposed to keep fibromyalgia suppressed. But vitamin therapy is necessary to repair damage. Especially a B complex. Doxycycline and Bactrim works for me on the mrsa and doxycycline for a year or so is supposed to clear up fibromyalgia. Yogurt everyday when you take antibiotics, yogurt should help with yeast too. 15705

I hadn't heard that about doxycycline. My sister and brother both had Lyme disease and were treated with that. I haven't seen anyone but my primary care physician for the fibro in several years. Are rheumatologists prescribing it or infectious disease specialists? 15760
