Are nail salons really safe?

I remember reading 2 years ago about a salon in Texas that was traced to the root of several particularly nasty CA MRSA infections. I can't find that article to save my soul, but there are plenty of others since then.

Much of the problems arise with the soaking footbaths at the pedicure stations. In addition to becoming "bacterial soup" rather quickly, the curtains that often separate the stations can also become contaminated when the manicurists open and close them.

So, having almost lost a leg and my life to HA MRSA several years ago, I just refuse to put my life in jeopardy for something so silly and vain as a professional manicure or pedicure. It only takes a nick and the MRSA can quickly invade.

I was stunned to learn how infrequently these places are even inspected and that some technicians actually reuse emery boards. That HAS to be bad idea for you cannot sterilize such porous things. Frankly, nothing is truly sanitized by just immersing in chemicals. The only way to guarantee true sterilization is to use an autoclave. I have never seen an autoclave in any salon.

Just wanted to bring up this topic. I know many of you are getting all dolled up for the holiday season. If you must go to a salon, consider taking your own personal tools. However, you really do enter at your own risk.

Science section on drop down menu, if you scroll down on Science page at bottom you will see Pedicure Safety Hazards video… this will surely give one a reason to pause!

Thanks, LadyK. As many times as I've visited the MAAB site, never once did I notice the dropdown menu! I think it needs to be highlighted so folks can find it.

It was quite interesting.

Nancy R -

The site is back burner neglected these days, although it gets many hits from around the world. France, Asia, and Africa are hard hitters lately. Additionally, you would be surprised to see who all from around the world come and how often~

Since I’ve retained the bulk of my authored posts which were deleted from forum… there are plans to put up a section on the various research done, for others to read through.

Glad you found it interesting Nancy.
