Diagnosed with MRSA in mouth

TO all I will try to make a long story short. Had a tooth ache back in December. Went to dentist and he said nothing was wrong with my tooth. At the end of Dec.the tooth was really bothering me so I called my dentist and again, took an xray and found nothing wrong with my tooth. He told me to go to an ear, nose and throat doctor thinking it could be my sinues. I didnt go. So mid Jan. the pain got so bad, I went to the ER and they dianosed me with TMJ. SO I followed up with an oral surgeon. He did a panoramic xray and said that the tooth I was complaining about had an infection that needed a root canal. Went to a root canal specialist, he drilled the tooth and started a root canal, gave me antibiotics and told me to come back in 3 weeks, so a week later the pain was really bad and when I called the dentist, he was on vacation. Went to another dentist who drilled the tooth but left it "open" so that the infection could drain. He put me on more antibiotics (augmentin). For three weeks we could not get the infection to go away. I went back to the oral surgeon who decided to do a surgical root canal. Had it done, and a week later an abcess developes in my mouth above the tooth. Call dentis, he puts me on more augmentin. Obviously, it did nothing. then the abcess started oozing pus, since I work in a medical laboratory, I figured that I should culture the pus that was coming out. 2 days later I am informed that I have MRSA. I was so upset and frightened. The MRSA is not resistant to clyndamycin so now I have been on that for two weeks. I am still in pain. THe infectious disease doctor said that although the abcess looks better, that I should go inot the hospital for IV antibiotics. How long am I contagious for? Can someone tell me the prognosis for MRSA? Is this something I will have to live for for the rest of my life? Now the oral surgeon thinks I should pull the tooth that I had trouble with and the one behind it. HELP!!!!! 14472

Magnesium pills really helped me. MRSA can't grow well in the presence of adequate magnesium. Magnesium cuts down on the toxins MRSA produces and cuts down on the pain. Most of us are low on magnesium. 14473

Follow your ID's instructions. You don't have to be in a hospital to have meds dripped. You can arrange to have it done in your home. You probably should have the tooth removed. By now, it's probably become very contaminated. The most important doctor you will have during your treatment is you ID. He will order up the concoctions to keep the bacteria in check. 14474

Thank you Ruth and Nancy. I have been reading all the posts on this forum, and one thing that pops up consistently is that MRSA is not just a one time infection. I have seen that it tends to come back. I was horrified when I got the diagnosis. ONe reason being that I've heard such horror stories about MRSA. ANd two, I dont know how long it has been in my system. I went months, 5 months to be precise, undiagnosed. HOw long am I contagious? HOw do I get retested after I have completed the course of antibiotics? Is it a blood test? Because the pus is no longer oozing from the abcess in my mouth. MY oral surgeon was shocked to know that it was in my mouth. He said he never saw that before. Sorry to chew your ear off, but I am so glad I found this site, finally some answers and I dont feel all alone. AS much as my family jokes around, I know they are frightened for me and for themselves as well. Thank you so much for your help and concern KIm 14476

Hi LadyK THank you so much for your help. Dont mean to be a pain in the butt, but I do have a couple of questions. IT is the eye tooth that started all the trouble. NOw the pain and tenderness in my face along the side of my nose and the sinus area is driving me nuts. Also I am still experiencing the throbbing all along the upper right side of my teeth, as well as getting occassional stabbing pain in my face. It has calmed down somewhat, but it is still there. Could this affect all my other teeth? Also, about 3 weeks before I was diagnosed with MRSA, the oral surgeon sent me for a CAT scan, and he said it was negative. Is that possible, because the abcess was there when I had to CAT scan. Again, I cannot thank you enough for you help. YOu are very informative and very intellingent as well. GOd Bless Kim 14478

LadyK: You must have been inside my head. I would have made the same recommendations. Again, I cannot stress the importance of a good ID. He/She may hold your life in his/her hands. Don't play around with this. As LadyK noted, this is in the head and that means near the brain, eyes, sinuses. Good luck. Nancy 14484

You ladies are simply the best. I spoke with the oral surgeon and he will be removing two of my teeth this week. I also spoke to my ID and he said that he would like to wait for after the teeth have been pulled to see if that eleviates the problem. He prescribe another week of clyndamiacin until I see him again. I feel like I am the only one really concerned about this (except you). Although the abcess is gone, I still feel pain. Am I just being paranoid? Again, you have both been a world of help and I cannot thank you enough. GOd bless you Kim 14497

dian - MRSA is a contagion... meaning it is passed by contact with another who is MRSA positive, or by picking up the bacteria left behind from an infected individual. It is quite possible to pass the bacteria to your friend's little one, and she should use every precaution to avoid this… as a six month old is quite vulnerable. Washing hands many times throughout the day, using hand sanitizer gel, and since her MRSA is apparently located in her mouth... no kissing, sneezing, coughing near child can help in not passing bacteria. Be sure newborn is seen often by physician, and child's physician is aware of MRSA in mother. Also I’d watch child’s temperature, and be sure child is taking in suitable sustenance... as spike in temp and lack of desire to eat and thrive can be first signs of complications/infection. What treatment is mother following? ladyk 14768

I was diagnosed with MRSA 4 yrs ago and have been having trouble with my teeth ever since. 3 root canals and 3 teeth pulled. Just got back from Dentist. I went again because of pain. He could not find anything to give me pain. I think he thinks I'm just trying to get pain meds. He put me me antibiotcs again. If he could'nt find anything wrong, then why the anibiotics????? 16013
