MRSA in the urine Posted by Janet Last Reply October 30, 2008 Started October 29, 2008 at 15:29 My original bout with MRSA was when I contracted it in the hospital from sinus surgery. I was ill for about 6 months and then went on IV Vanco. I just went in to my PCP for a UTI and my urine came back MRSA positive. I can find very little information on MRSA in the urine. I also wonder where else it is my body. I work in a medical facility and I have a newborn grandchild and worry about both constantly being in contact with MRSA and constantly worried about spreading it. The Dr says just to wash wash wash the hands. There are so many questions and so few answers. 13698

I know what you mean. I take care of my 83 year old father and I was just told that he has mrsa in his urine. I was told not to worry about it but to wear gloves when emptying the urinal. It's very confusing. Are my kids at risk? Is it contagious? 15953

Hi Joanne, If it is in the urine, where else is it? Not to worry? What about your father? What are they going to do to get rid of it? Just because he is 83 doe not mean he has to remain infected. Get an Infectious Disease Specialist involved ASAP. I would imagine he is in great pain. MRSA is very contagious. Everyone who has contact with him is at risk. Hygiene is extremely important. It is also important to improve his immune system through diet and supplements. Read through the posts for more information. All of us here have experienced MRSA. My Best, Lois Lois 15959

My Mom is in a nursing home and has been diagnosed with MRSA in her urine. She has dementia. They put her in isolation and on medication and said to wear a gown adn gloves when I visit. However, today I find out they can't restrain her so she is going about the nursing home in her wheel chair? What to do and What questions to ask?? 16518

Where are the answers??? My Dad has dementia and was told that he has mrsa in his urine. Did that result from the nursing home or the hospital????? 16544

Linda - They (nursing home) can restrain your mother with a physician's order. Although nursing home should implement precautions, and I have no doubt state regulations demand them to do so in situations of infectious pathogenic (disease causing) contagions such as MRSA, problem is... caring for her isolation needs becomes an effort for overloaded care givers, and often neglect becomes an issue. Isolation can be a sad, lonely, and misunderstood consequence of MRSA, especially for one with dementia. In my opinion what you describe is negligence, risking not only your mother due to her compromised health and ability for other common institutional pathogens to influence her health... but ALL others are at risk as well since she is capable of cross contaminating the MRSA bacteria. It would not be beyond me to confront head honcho of establishment and inquire as to their ‘infectious disease precautions’ and request a print out copy. Fact is… cross contamination of the MRSA bacteria could have occurred any number of ways. Since MRSA is so prevalent in our society it is difficult to pin point actual contraction, hence the difficulty in successful law suits. tammy - MRSA bacteria can/does colonize groin, perineum, etc. It is quite likely bacteria was cross contaminated from hands and traveled up to bladder. Does she have problems with chronic urinary infections? Or had she been hospitalized where a catheter was inserted into her bladder? It would be my suggestion to find an Infectious Disease specialist to address this problem, as well as use Hibiclens antimicrobial wash in shower to reduce bacteria overload and avoid the risk of spreading the bacteria. Impeccable hand washing is necessary as MRSA is a contagion. Is she currently being treated? Hope this helps. Best wishes, ladyk 16662

I had VRE while in the hospital 3 years ago. My leg went septic & had to be operated on for drainage. The VRE was deadly & was discovered from pathology as a result of a pic line. It was removed, then the MRSA showed up & has for now 3 years scared me, traveled to ALL points of my skin. I got a flu bug couple weeks ago. Chest cold more like it! A boil then another, another in less than 24 hours on my forehead to back of skull appeared. Doctor says, "It's gone internal" Daptomiacin is strong stuff, damaged my mitril valve. You all talk of MRSA anyone had VRE HA acquired? Rifampin, Bactrim, Mupirocin & Triamcinolone..Sigh..tired. 16683

Leatrica - My heart goes out to you and your baby and I wish both of you well. I'm not a doctor and I cannot give any medical advice, all I can do is discuss the properties of crushed raw garlic and let people and their health care providors make their own decisions. People should always do what their doctors say and any alternative therapies should be used in addition to one's health care providors' treatments rather than instead of and with their knowledge. You are in a good place to learn everything you can about MRSA and the various treatment options and what they mean to you and your baby so you can make your decisions from a more knowledgeable position. Read as many of these threads as you can to learn all you can about the options available and how they may affect you and your baby. Garlic can be used in many ways to fight MRSA infections unless one is allergic to it. If people are allergic to garlic they should not use it at all. Anything in circulation in your body also gets into your baby's body for better or worse and that's where you have to be careful. Things done or not done at this time can have great long term consequences for you and your baby. Now is the time for you to educate yourself to protect your and your baby's best interests. i just found out that i have mrsa in the urine. i work in a nursing facility and to my knowledge thats where i contracted it. my doctor wants to do a skin culture. am i contagious skin on skin with it just in my urine? 17064

kayla - Due to human error cross contamination, you should consider yourself contagious and utilize precautions. Impeccable hand washing is necessary. Do you have patient contact? Why does physician wish to do skin culture? Where? Are you experiencing lesion outbreak? Have you been nare cultured to determine carrier status? Let me know. Best wishes, ladyk 17068

theresa - To your questions: ["What causes MRSA in the URINE"] Having the MRSA bacteria present which is cross contaminated at time of catheter insertion. Catheter offers avenue for bacteria to enter system. ["how can I know that my husband is cured"] A culture would need to be done to determine if MRSA bacteria is present… and then treated appropriately. [“will it affect any more of the body”] If MRSA continues to be present and not treated appropriately, progression is plausible when considering this aggressive pathogenic (disease causing) contagion. Individual is most at risk when immune compromised where system is unable to control bacteria, and treatment is non existing or not susceptible. As well MRSA can be cross contaminated to any part of body when one is MRSA positive. Hope this helps. ladyk 17463

I HAVE AN ILEAL CONDUIT SECONDARY TO BLADDER CANCER. I HAD CHEMOTHERAPY FINISHED IN JUNE. I HAVE MRSA IN THE URINE, HAD A 10 DAY COURSE OF VANCOMYCIN, BUT IT RECURRED. I AM THINKING ABOUT JUST SUPRESSING IT AS I HAVE VERY LIITLE SYGNS, IE, LOW GRADE FEVER. HAVE BEEN ON BACRIM DS ONCE A DAYRIGHT AFTER MY BLADDR SURGERY IN MARCH2010 WITH GOOD RESULTS AS I NEVER HAD ANY FEVER. IF THIS A TREATMENT MODE? 17562
