Bad taste in mouth with MRSA

My wife is a nurse in a major hospital. She was told she has MRSA after surgery to open her sinuses. She has also had lung disease in the past. She washes her sinuses out twice a day with a pump and saline water. Now all the time she has a really bad taste in her mouth. It is very bad with a sweet taste. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS BAD TASTE IN THEIR MOUTH?
The Sunday after Christmas I took her into the emergency room. She had an outbreak on the end of one of her fingers. She was given an IV antibiotic. They said this was for all other staff infections but not for MRSA. She was told to watch her finger. If it didn’t get better it was MRSA. Two doctors and two nurses worked with her. Not one of them used precautions. We informed them at the start that she had MRSA.
The hospitals in the US are very lax with this bug. There are other countries that now screen every person for MRSA before they are included in the general population.
My hart goes out to everyone who has to deal with this.

thank you fishing costarica.this is your wife. just a correction. i have a case mrsa that only responds to vanco.
the infection in my finger did repsond to vanco, so i feel that this was prob mrsa. i wash my sinuses 2xday as stated, but i still have this taste. has anyone else experienced this taste? just about every nurse carries mrsa. my sinuses have been deemed clean, but still the taste persists. any comments would be helpful. to me it means i still have the
infection. concerned rn

Are you sure you don't simply have a case of thrush mouth as a result of taking the antibiotic? That would be very common. You can tell by looking at the tongue. If it appears to be coated, you probably have a yeast infection (thrush). You will need an antifungal (nystatin) or you could try using Oreganol (3 drops on either side of your tongue, 3 times a day for 6 weeks. The latter is a homeopathic cure.

I was just diagnosed with MRSA after a sinus surgery to repair a deviated septum. It is terrible. I do not have a bad taste in my mouth, but a bad smell that resembles what you describe--very BAD and kind of sweet.

I have a staph infection (still do) from my sinus surger in December 2007. Never been told it was exactly mrsa but resistent to many medications. I smelled a cigarette smoke for a long time and now I really only smell a sweet moldy dirt smell, this is also the taste I have in my mouth. My sense of smell and taste is pretty much gone except for the nasty mold dirt taste. Now the doctor says I have a psuedonomis infection? Do you also have throbbing pain over your cheek bones and around your nose? I often feel like I was struck in the face by a base ball bat and my face around my nose gets very swollen.

Ok well I know I have really bad sinuses and should have surgery but I don't think this is connected. I don't know where to turn, so I will start here. In the last 6-8 weeks I have experienced a moldy taste in my mouth when I eat ketchup (started with that) apple juice, and now apples and tomato sauce. I have been snooping around on here and can't seem to find anything. There has been no change in any of my medications, so I don't think it is that. Plus I have been on them for a long time. I'm afraid to say anything to my Dr for fear of being told it is in my head, like the stomach and abdominal pain nobody can seem to find a cause for. I live in the US.

Kim -

In my opinion, if insurance covers… it takes toooo long to weed through the knowing and unknowing ears, nose, throat GPs. Unless you have one willing to do diagnostic tests, and has a “good” referral base. If it were me I’d head to an Allergist, even a Specialist in Sinus Surgery - getting to the issue directly.

Request nare (nostril) cultures. Results will provide answer to whatever is lingering around. I’d also request Bactroban antibiotic oint while waiting on results, for purpose of decolonizing nares. This is accomplished by swirling oint on Q-tip in nostrils 2x daily x5 days. I can not say it has been my experience to have a “moldy” sense of taste, severe anorexia bouts during outbreak process - yes, but some believe MRSA hits our biological pre-disposed weaknesses. You could very well be experiencing a sinus “bacterial” infection that is draining down the back of throat, where swallowing might have a “moldy” taste. Not sure what part the ketchup, apple juice, apples and tomato sauce play… except maybe at the time you were ingesting these items? also infection is draining. Oddly all items mentioned are sweet acidic. Perhaps even oral thrush (yeast) but usually this becomes distinct enough with white patches, pain, etc. to drive us to the doctor? Concerning stomach issues… a couple of thoughts, swallowing infected drainage in stomach, damage done by MRSA, damage done by antibiotic therapy, in my case Gastroenterologist
found many peptic ulcers during endoscopy. You really should have this looked into ASAP rather than speculating. It‘s better to know what your up against so you can work on best outcome for yourself.

Here’s a few questions for you. What symptoms of bad sinuses are we speaking of here in your case? What surgery are you considering? How were you diagnosed MRSA positive? What treatments (antibiotics), and what maintenance do you follow? One would have to know what medications your on, and what you were given as MRSA care in order to research serious interactions including any supplements you are mixing with routine meds, side effects… can do such things as alter one’s taste, hearing, etc.

Hope this helps.

Nikki:

What you describe is likely thrush. Simply see your doctor and he'll prescribe Nystatin or you can do as I suggested and use capsules with 3 drops of Oreganol three times a day for 6 weeks. In either case, this is a fungus that comes when you take antibiotics. The antibiotics often take out the good flora, too.

I was treated for a sinus infection 2 weeks ago with Amoxicillan (Sp). Since then my symptoms have gotten "slightly" better, but far from gone. I have also developed a yeast infection and tried meds from doctor to rid of the problem and I am still dealing with this also, barely. This past week on top of just feeling crummy I have developed a horrible taste in my mouth that has this strange sweet smell that I notce when blowing my nose. Should I be concerned?

I was diagnose with MRSA 2 weeks ago. I've had this sore in my right arm since Nov. of 08 that caused by a biopsy done by dermatology. The sore got bigger and the scab really looked bad and everytime I show him he just say it's just a scab and it don't look infected. As it turned out under the scab it had fuss and it was infected after all. No thanks to that dermatologist who probably cause all this problem for me. This awful taste in my mouth is been going since early december. It made me lose my appetite and I don't have the slightest clue on who to call or ask about it. The doctor gave me Sulfmeth/Trimeth DS Tab generic for Septra Ds Tab for 10 days 2x a day but I don't really think it helps a bit. I just want this awful taste in my mouth to go away. Please if anyone can give me advice or help I would really appreciate it. Since I been going thru this I've lost almost 20 lbs and getting thinner as I'm writing this reply. Help!

I have this horrible dirt taste in my mouth. However, I have not been on antibiodics in over a year so that dismisses the Thrush theory. Any suggestions?

Debbie:

No it doesn't. Taking antibiotics is just ONE way to get thrush. Anytime your gut is out of balance, you can get yeast or thrush. I'd try the Oreganol and see it if helps. If not, it won't hurt you.

Bob:

I haven't a clue what you took, but joint meds normally wouldn't be associated with bad taste in your mouth. You probably should see a physician and find out what's going on.

Used Nysten but thrust relapsed I control 90% of oral thrust by oral hygine, washing mouth after every meal. When it was worse in beginning I used Mandels Paint (Iodine and KI in glycerine) to neutralize some carbohydrade, (Not recommended on regular bases), Which gives blue colour. Also washing with dilute solution of Hydrogen peroxide and sometime with mouth wash. I avoided sugar. i Have no obvious signs except slight whiteness on tongue after constipation.

But i am not completely cured and looking for complete cure ?
