Social Security Disability

I posted this earlier, but didn't see it listed.

Short version: I contracted MRSA in my lower back in June 2007, spent 2 weeks in the hosptial and had surgery to "suck it out."

I haven't been able to work since and since I have no income, my husband and I are in a financial crisis.

Has anyone applied for Social Security Disability benefits? I am 57 years old.

Any information would be appreciated.
Shirley

try filling out the forms, but make sure you start to write down everything even the tiniest tings.and they turn everyone down the 1st time, it tokk my 4 yar's to get on it, but I was in my 20's . I'm 45 now, and I'm in Canada , you need to get your doctour to fill out details to. it'll stress you out, so if you have a counceler get them to help, r your family, the things they noticed tell them them to wirte them down when they notice something, and if they can give you a hand filling them out, because it'll knock the hell out of you. I did it alone and it was a nightmare
good luck

Tina,

Thank you for your response! I have filled out Part I of the process and have yet to fill out the actual application. You are so right! The forms are hellish....it is like writing a book. I know they deny at first and you have to be diligent in appealing their decision. I like your suggestion that family and friends write down their observations.

I wonder how other people who can't work get by financially?

Thanks,
Shirley

Get yourself an advocate, someone experienced the the whole DSS fiasco, I mean system.
I don't think I would have been able to get it without the doctors and counselors helping me out to fill the forms, and I think they know better how to answer some of the questions.
Good luck!

if you have suffered depression in any way and continue to suffer it from contracting this mke sure you include this in your application and hve bckup from your doctors. if you havent seen a doctor for it go see one. i hte to say this but they will put someone on dis faster if you are uffering from a mental distress. i know this has probably affected you that way somehow so dont be shamed to include this if it is so. i know no one wants to be deemed a mental case but if this helps you to get it quicker then do it. someone i know had lots of back surgery he kept getting denied but never included his mental anguish from ll this when he did he got approved.

My ID doctor asked if I was suffering from depression and said I had every right to be.

Lately, I can just cry at the drop of a hat so yes, I can say I am depressed, etc. I will definaely look at seeing a doctor for this. Would any mental health professional be OK?

Thanks,
Shirley

if i were you i would make it a point to see a psychiatrist because crying at the drop of a hat, not able to conentrate , unable to sleep, feelings of worthlessness, chronic worry loss of appetite ll are symptoms of depression. This needs to be documented by a professional. This also needs to be a reason why you cant work due to all the symptoms. if they make their decision based soley on the depression you will have to continue therapy to stay eligible. mke sure you add all other health ailments in your application also these all will count in their decision. At their website there is a list of ailments that mostly qualify you can look at it if you want. Another thing be very detailed in your response. hope this helps. oh nd fter you see a psych tell all your other docs. let me tell you this, the therapy will probbly help in dealing with the mrsa. my therapist has helped me a lot and is keeping me sane through all this because i continue to ger worse.

Mary,
Thank you for your info.

How did you pick your therapist? I have never seen one so I don't know how to pick one.

So did you get disability? If so, how long did it take?

Thanks again,
Shirley

wow your getting wonderfull advice, isn't this place a god send!!!, make sure you tell them if it's making you lose your balance, having trouble going to the washroom,if you forget things, or can't focouce on things, if you have trouble sleeping, or getting something out of the cupboard, openning things, my eye site has been effected. how many steps you can take if any with out pain, if you have trouble walking up steps, if your heart races. if you get sick to your stomack, or can't eat, how much pain your in every hour of every day,ask your doctor to refer you to a therapist, yo might want to ask him or her about getting someone like a intensive case managment conseler, they come right to your home, here they do. also the stress it's put on your family, here's the one that bugged me, they want to know how it's effected your sex life. if it hasn't they think your ok if you can have sex your fine, which blow's big time!! lol ok that sounds bad, aw it's god for a giggel

Where do I start? I'm glad to fine some place to talk about(ca-mrsa). My friends tell me I should look-into medical ss disability. I just don't know where to start. I was 1st diagn.6/05 after having foot surgery. I finally healed and return to work.I also became addicted to prescription medications in 2006-04/07 and have been in a recovery program. I also had resign from my job under duress, maybe not a good thing. Suddenly I developed a sore and cultures done on the wound and now mrsa again. 3 antibotics started. I have a couple more months of COBRA then no insurance. I have a home pending forclosure and no job pending.

BE QUITTING AFTER THIS CUSTOMERS LOAN CLOSED. THE NEXT DAY I GOT AN
EMAIL FROM MY BOSS WHO SAID THAT THE LOCKS HAD BEEN CHANGED ON THE
OFFICE DOOR AND TO COME AND PICK UP MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS. I APPLIED
FOR unemployment and was denied because he diD not pAY INTO
UNEMPLOYMENT EVEN THOUGH HE WAS REQUIRED BY LAW. SINCE THAT TIME I
HAVE BEEN DEPRESSED, I AM ALSO GOING BLIND AND DEAF AND HAVE CHRONIC

Hello, sorry to hear about this happening to you.My sister had MRSA a few years ago. She was in a coma for 1 month and then they couldn't help her anymore and sent her to a neurological hospital where she got better although she had to be in a nursing home for 5 months. She had been trying to get disability for 9 years due to so many health problems. I called them up and said she is in a coma,is she disabled now?It went through, finally.I know someone who told me about how they decide. One factor is how much education you have. They kept telling her she could do sit down jobs and such. She had 5 years of college and a teaching degree. She had constant bouts of migraine headaches and would vomit, fibromialgia, her feet are deformed due to rheumatoid arthritis.I would call, if you could the person over the decisions,in the Federal Building, that's what i did. Hope it works out good for you.
