I was diagnosed with MRSA about a year and a half ago. I contracted it while having a simple hernia surgery. I started having drainage from the surgery site and ended up in the emergency room. The docotors told us if we would have waited 24hrs later I would have died. I was in the hospital for 10dys.I was put on IV's and had two diffrent antibiotics pumped through me every 1/2 hour. I had to go in and have the wound packed until it healed from the inside out.The MRSA erupted inside and out leaving a great deal of damage. I now have an entrapped nerve as well. I am always tired, have no stamina, joint pain, headaches and feel horrible all the time. I have never had health problems before. The surgery site for the hernia had a mesh put in and that has never been removed. I am wondering if I should be concerned about this? I am the mother of two teenage kids and a 4yr old. I feel terrible because I have been so sick. I am not the mom I used to be. I have taken FMLA from work and do not kn... read more

GM food and immune system

This might be old news to most people, but Hubby and I just rented part I of the movie "The Future of Food" that deals with genetically-modified foods in the USA. What an unbelievable horror story! Corn, soy, beet sugar, cotton and canola are the primary modified foods, having either resistance to herbicides or presence of insect-killing toxins built-in to their genetics.

Two things jumped out at me - the use of a fragment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial DNA included with the modifications, to prove the success of the genetic transfer by ensuring that only the newly-resistant cells survive the test dose of antibiotics! This bit of resistant bacterial DNA comes along in the final food products and affects the livestock which eat it, the humans who eat it, the groundwater of the land on which the crops grow, etc. etc. Any wonder that antibiotic resistance is such a force today? In the US, GM crops in our food have been common and unlabeled since 1996...

new to MRSA ... many questions

I have had MRSA for just under two weeks. It started on my right calf below my knee and another abscess showed up on my lower left butt cheek several days after that. I am constantly draining and wrapping these in gauze and have been on the antibiotic Sulfameth/Trimethoprim for a week now. I am terrified of even the slightest little bump on my body. How long can this possibly go on? It makes me feel disgusting, not to mention very tired and achy.

Here are some general questions, and if anyone could help me out, I'd be so appreciative:

Will I ever be truly rid of this, or will it always be in my system, even once I'm done taking antibiotics and the physical symptoms have faded? I've been on antibiotics for a week now - what is the likelihood that this could spread to yet another location on my body?

How soon and how often should I thoroughly sanitize my apartment (and wash my clothes in hot water)? Should I wait until my physical symptoms have cleared or start now? What abou... read more

I have been taking Allibiotic CF for awhile now and I seem to be able to tolerate it. Do I need to take an additional oregano supplement?

I started to take "iFlora, a Multi-Probiotic Formula, a Blend of 16 Strains 16 Billion Cells" produced by Sedona Labs just recently? At about the same time I started drinking Chocolate Light Silk Milk?. I started having intestinal problems. I connected that to the Silk Milk. Beans are beans in any form! However, I'm still not feeling quite right. My intestinal system just isn't quite right and I have this uneasy weak feeling. I am more regular than I have been in several months!

At about the same time I started taking a new Brand of slow release iron? The light therapy box is fairly new too. All in the month of January.

Then I think of C Dif. I never had it, but.... Is it possible it can have been dormate since last April? Or am I just thinking too much? I have no fever.

I see my internist Monday for a regular followup vi... read more

How reliable are hospital tests for MRSA

My father had a painful skin rash that started as an area of what he thought were "bug bites". That rang my bells because I had CA-MRSA a few years ago and that's how my outbreak began.

The rash on my dad itched madly and moved around on his chest and back for weeks. Last weekend he complained of a headache, low fever and night sweats and finally a hard, tight cough. Up until then he'd been to the doctor twice who dismissed the possibility of MRSA and sent him home with common anti-itch cream. His newer symptoms finally sent him to the ER.

He was kept overnight because of a slight irregular heartbeat (he's 89 years old), but was sent home the next day and with no diagnosis that I know of. I did inquire about whether he could have MRSA and was told no...that routine tests were done on all incoming patients and if MRSA were found he'd have been isolated.

I still think he may have MRSA involvement. My question is, are hospital diagnostic procedures reliable? From what I'... read more

Just got MRSA

I recently just got MRSA. I had a mole on my stomach that itched really bad. One day I felt something that stung and I lifted up my shirt and saw a clear blister on the border of the mole and skin. I touched the blister and it popped. I immediately cleaned it and within two days it was red and infected. I went to the doctor where he prescribed keflex. I took the medication for 7 days and the infection got worse. I had a hard lump under the mole that was 1 1/2 inches round. On top of that I had a 3 inch diameter of redness. It was red and really angry looking. My doctor immediately suspected MRSA and cut it open and cultured it. My doctor changed my medication to two really aggressive antibiotics which seem to be working. I am afraid that their will be some skin damage to that area. I am still really confused about MRSA. Do I have a MRSA infection or is it colonized? I am concerned about giving it to my wife and kids, My wife seems really paranoid about me giving it t... read more

lesion question

I'm wondering about lesions. I know I keep harping on this, but I can't seem to let it go. I certainly apologize for taking everyone's time! And you all understand so much more than my friends!
My lesion had the hard, itchy bump in the middle, and that grew to about the size of a dime. But....the area immediately surrounding that got bright red (like an angry red color), probably three inches or so around. The red area surrounding the middle bump was not a smooth circle around the edges, but jagged and pointy. It was not raised, only the middle part. As I've said before, the middle part does not open and drain. Does anyone else get such an angry red area around their lesion? I hope I'm not the only one!
Thank you all once again! You make me feel better just by listening.

Aspirin for MRSA

Aspirin, a common, cheap drug found in most households can help your body clear
even "superbugs"---bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics. One of the
most worrisome superbugs is staphylococcus aureus, which is what puts the "S" and
the "A" in MRSA. S.

Science Daily reported on a Dartmouth Medical School study published in the Journal
of Clinical Investigation. According to the Dartmouth study, aspirin disrupts "the
ability of S. Aureus to produce toxins, which the bacteria require to propagate and
spread to other tissue." Fewer toxins equal fewer bacteria. Fewer bacteria equal fewer
healthy cells becoming infected.

Aspirin does not cure the bacterial infection, nor does it reduce the scope of infection
already present. What aspirin does do is keep the bad guys from multiplying and
spreading as rapidly as they normally would. By limiting the ability of bacteria to
multiply and spread, aspirin limits the ability of infection to go, literally, out... read more

Comparison - garlic vs. oil of oregano?

Have any of you compared the two - garlic versus oil of oregano?

We take Allibiotic CF but have never used the more expensive versions of pure garlic extract. However, we've used oil of oregano topically (with care, since it can burn!) and have just started taking oil of oregano capsules internally. Taking the oil internally seems very effective, especially for our son, who was experiencing some breakthrough pimples after about a month clear on supplements alone.

It sounds to me like the two natural plant extracts have similar antibiotic properties. Both strong, both need to be used with care topically...Oil of oregano has the advantage of being available at the health food store. Raw garlic of course you can work with at home (thank you for your tips, Bob) but it does come with garlic odor, which I don't mind :) but my husband complains...! The garlic that is advertised with fervor all over the internet (...stabilized purified patented only from one source) seems so expensiv... read more

Hand Dryers

This was sent to me today by a very trusted friend.

I thought that this was very interesting information.

Everyone in the cleaning industry has always been told that hand dryers in restrooms are not sanitary, they spread germs and bacteria around. I always thought that this just came from the paper companies because they are loosing sales to the hand dryers. A couple of years ago, I was working with a rep, and I noticed that after he washed his hands and noticed that there were no paper towels , only a hand dryer he left the restroom with wet hands. I asked him about it. He said that hand dryers blow a lot of germs and bacteria around. He also told me to take a look under the hand dryer next time I was in a restroom. There is a filter underneath the hand dryer that is supposed to be cleaned on a weekly basis. I looked at one and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. It had layers and layers of caked on gunk (disgusting). Since then I will not use hand d... read more

Hi, everyone,
I am sorry to say that I think I have another infection. It's the exact same spot as the three previous lesions, that itchy bump that I can't stand! My last one was mid-November. I made it two months. Before that, it was 11 months between lesions, with no special precautions as all.
I have to tell you I'm in total shock. I have NOT been complacent! I take my supplements every day, use the Hibiclens in the shower every three days, wash just about everything with bleach, never use the same towel, completely wipe the house with the Clorox Wipes from the toothbrush handle to the cabinets to the chairs to the remotes, even my car, every week! At school I wash constantly. After the lesion in November, we went through the house with Lysol and washed everything from the floors to the walls and in between!
There is nothing I can think of to do that I don't already do. I am truly sick over this. I think I must be one of those people who will get it for no reason a... read more

Hi everyone, I have been Lesion free for six months now and trying to stay that way.I have been under extreme stress lately and I am afraid it will cause me to get sick again. I really fear for my health because of stress from everything that is happening in my life.Loss of my mom 3 years ago, which I got my Mrsa from trying to revive her,Court battles over her will and Estate, loss of most of my family over their greed, and after I thought this was all settled something else pops up to do with estate and I feel like I have to fight the good fight for my moms wishes. On top of that, trying to plan my daughter wedding on a tight budget because of all the money I owe for treatment of mrsa and all the supplements I have to get to keep Mrsa free.I am feel as though I am working just to keep mrsa away.Should I... read more

Hi,
I've been going through many old posts, and found a thread from a while ago (don't remember how long ago) where someone was going to post people's stories and photos (I think Nancy's birds?). Just wondering if they're still posted anywhere. I'd love to see them!
On a completely unrelated topic, how do you tell the difference between a "normal" pimple and a MRSA or staph pimple? I think I'm starting to annoy my friends because I get very upset (basically, I freak out) at every pimple (which, since my surgery, I seem to get more of lately!). Is it the itching sensation? Any other clues?
Thank you once again!

can carriers spread?
Posted by wary
Last Reply January 24, 2010 at 15:24
Started January 23, 2010 at 16:29
This question isn't about MRSA only, but any staph. If one were a "carrier", ie, colonized in nose, can this be easily spread? If one were going to work with medically vulnerable adults (ie someone on ventilator, feeding tube, etc), could they be jeopardized if one WAS a carrier?

I ask because I may work with such an individual in the future and while I have not been diagnosed with staph or MRSA, someone at my job had mrsa and I had to dispense meds to them. After reading all this I'm thinking it would be wise to get a "nose swab" before I accepted a position working with people in a more medical type setting. Also, I get little reddish "zits" if you will, and always have, in various places on may skin. Could it be possible I have a regular staph infection?
